About Plano V.F.D. It is the primary mission for the 20+ members of Plano Volunteer Fire Department to provide a range of programs and services, designed to protect the lives and property of all the residents and visitors within the Plano Fire Protection District from the adverse effects of fires, sudden medical emergencies, exposure to hazardous materials or exposure to any other dangerous conditions, natural or man-made. |
Our Firefighters Throughout the course of any given year, our personnel respond to just shy of 400. Typically, approximately three hundred of these calls are medical in nature. Firefighters trained as first responders provide rapid interventions and basic life support (BLS) on calls like these. The remainder of the calls our firefighters respond to are mostly fire-related. However, the job does not stop there. In addition to being ready to answer the call for an emergency 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, there is always work to be done at one of two stations that house seven fire apparatuses. Performing critical vehicle maintenance, inspecting equipment, filing reports, and training take up a great deal of time; there's a lot more to it than just responding to emergencies. |
Continuing Education Several times throughout the year, firefighters give up their weekends at home with their families and friends in order to take part in continuing education classes so they can stay up to date with the latest in fire-prevention methods, arson detection, hazardous materials incidents, technology, protective equipment and more. Add that on top of bi-monthly meetings, and you see why being a volunteer firefighter is a serious commitment. Veteran firefighters Ron Threlkel, Steve Coots, and Kevin Greathouse epitomize the great dedication our men offer to the community. All three are activate in the leadership of the department and have been serving for over 20 years. That's longer than than some of our trucks have been in service. |
Our Board Members Also instrumental to the effectiveness of Plano Volunteer Fire Department is the board of trustees. Currently headed by Board Chairman Keith Mueller, the nine members of the board work closely with the Chief, Kevin Greathouse, to manage the budget and ensure the department is providing the level of service the community needs. |
